Cardpocalypse is a charming role playing game that captures the essence of growing up in the 1990s. You step into the light up sneakers of a ten year old named Jess on her first day at a new school. Things quickly go wrong when she accidentally gets the most popular collectible card game banned by the teachers. The students take their battles underground just as the monsters from the cards begin invading the real world.
The main gameplay loop blends schoolyard exploration with strategic card battles. You walk around the elementary school taking on quests, trading candy, and challenging classmates to matches. The hook comes from the ability to permanently alter your cards using stickers and magazines. You get to change the rules of the game on the fly, making every deck completely unique to your playthrough.
You play as Jess navigating her first week at Dudsdale Elementary. Her innocent mistake causes the beloved Mega Mutant Power Pets game to be strictly forbidden. The situation escalates when the fictional creatures from the cards suddenly materialize in the real world. Jess must gather her new friends, master the card game, and defeat the mutants to save her school.
Matches revolve around powerful Champion cards that evolve into stronger forms when their health drops below half. You customize your deck by trading with classmates and applying permanent sticker upgrades to your favorite monsters. The atmosphere drips with nineties nostalgia, featuring bright cartoon visuals and references to floppy disks and cheat code magazines. The addition of a roguelike Gauntlet Mode provides excellent replay value after the main campaign.
Cardpocalypse successfully merges a heartfelt coming of age story with a deep card battler. The mechanic of permanently altering your cards gives a wonderful sense of ownership over your deck. The nostalgia factor is handled beautifully without overshadowing the solid mechanics beneath. It provides a highly enjoyable trip back to a simpler time of trading cards and recess drama.
Best for. Fans of deck builders who enjoy lighthearted stories and creative game mechanics.
