Overview

Citizen Sleeper places you in the shoes of a digitized human consciousness fleeing a massive corporation. You wake up on a ruined space station called Erlin's Eye. The game operates like a digital tabletop roleplaying experience. Your survival depends on managing your limited energy and choosing who to trust.

Every cycle brings a new set of action dice that dictate what you can accomplish. You must balance earning money for food, repairing your decaying artificial body, and helping the local residents. The decisions you make will open new paths and close others. It is a brilliant blend of resource management and deep narrative choice that keeps you constantly engaged.

Storyline

You are a Sleeper owned by a ruthless corporation called Essen Arp. You have escaped their grasp and washed up on a chaotic space station filled with outcasts. Your artificial body is programmed to slowly decay without specialized corporate medicine. You must navigate the criminal factions and desperate scavengers to find a way to break free from your creators permanently. The narrative is deeply personal and reacts to the friends you make or the enemies you cross.

Gameplay and atmosphere

The core loop revolves around rolling dice at the start of each cycle and assigning them to different tasks. You might use a high roll to hack a secure terminal or a low roll to do manual labor at the docks. Ticking clocks track your progress on long term goals and impending dangers. The atmosphere is beautifully bleak with stunning cyberpunk character art and an emotional synthesizer soundtrack.

Improvements I would like to see

  • The late game resource management becomes too easy once you establish a steady income.
  • More varied visual backgrounds for the different station sectors would help make exploration feel distinct.

Final Verdict

Citizen Sleeper is a brilliant example of narrative design that perfectly captures the feeling of a tabletop roleplaying campaign. It tells a profoundly human story about surviving in a broken capitalist society. The dice mechanics create tense moments of risk and reward without ever feeling unfair. Anyone who loves science fiction and rich character interactions will find themselves completely absorbed in this world.

Best for: Fans of story rich games and tabletop mechanics who want a gripping science fiction tale.

Skip if: You prefer action packed combat or fast paced gameplay.

(Ps.. heres some beginner tips)

  1. Focus on stabilizing early: Prioritize finding a reliable source of medicine to keep your body from breaking down.

  2. Do not waste low dice: Even a low roll can be useful for safely exploring the local network or grinding out basic tasks.

  3. Invest in relationships: Helping the locals is the best way to unlock powerful new abilities and uncover the most interesting storylines.
