Overview

Welcome to a bright and optimistic apocalypse. In Flotsam the world has flooded but that does not mean humanity is finished. You take charge of a small group of drifters floating on the endless garbage sea. Your main goal is to collect passing ocean trash and turn it into a colorful floating town. It is a fresh take on the city builder genre where your foundation is constantly moving and expanding.

The core gameplay loop revolves around scavenging building and surviving. You will send your drifters to grab plastic driftwood and metal scraps right out of the water. These materials are then used to build homes workshops and water purifiers. As your town grows you can attach sails and move your entire settlement across the map to find new resources and rescue stranded survivors.

Storyline

The earth has been swallowed by a massive flood leaving behind a polluted ocean filled with remnants of the old world. You guide a group of drifters who refuse to give up hope in this waterlogged wasteland. Along the way you recruit unique specialists like chemists and electricians who bring their own personal stories and skills. Together you uncover sunken ruins and piece together the history of what happened before the waters rose. Your ultimate mission is to build a self sustaining ecosystem and cure pollution born diseases.

Gameplay and atmosphere

You manage resources by stringing together production pipelines to turn waste into useful materials. Survival depends on balancing food clean water and the health of your drifters as they navigate polluted zones. The atmosphere is surprisingly cheerful and vibrant despite the apocalyptic setting. Bright colors quirky character designs and upbeat music make the act of cleaning up ocean garbage feel relaxing. Transitioning from burning firewood to using green energy gives a deep sense of progression.

Improvements I would like to see

  • More variety in random events while sailing to keep the long journeys exciting.
  • A faster way to reorganize buildings once the floating town becomes massive.

Final Verdict

Flotsam is a charming and inventive take on the survival city builder genre. It takes a grim concept like a flooded polluted earth and turns it into a bright optimistic experience. The satisfaction of transforming a pile of wet garbage into a beautiful functioning community is immense. Managing the needs of your drifters while researching new technologies provides a solid challenge without feeling overly stressful.

Best for: Players who enjoy creative city building and resource management with a relaxing vibrant aesthetic.

Skip if: You prefer intense combat or dark gritty survival games with punishing difficulty.

(Ps.. heres some beginner tips)

  1. Prioritize Water: Always build a desalinator early. Thirst is the quickest way your drifters will fail.

  2. Grab Everything: Do not let floating scrap pass you by especially in the early stages. You will need every piece of plastic and wood to expand your base.

  3. Watch the Pollution: Keep an eye on the health of your drifters. Exposure to old world pollution can make them sick so research cures as soon as possible.
